(free)Anaerobic digestion (AD) positively affects energy structure optimization, greenhouse gas reduction, and environmental protection. In this sense, many studies have discussed how to recover those organic wastes by transforming them into valuable products to reduce treatment costs or create a new economy, such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs). In this context, the addition of iron-based nanoparticles (FeNPs) aims to boost the AD process that speeds up the hydrolysis or acidification stage to enhance the biogas output by strongly degrading biomass through direct or indirect interspecies electron transfer (Figure 1). Therefore, to increase VFA production, the subsequent use of nZVI/Fe3O4 -NPs emerges as a new strategy to provide better AD conditions and improve VFA production.
