Engineering a solution to a large wastewater catchment scheme: PRESENTATION ONLY

Ridley, B., United Utilities, UK

(free)

United Utilities are currently delivering a major capital catchment strategy project in Morecambe.  Driven by an enhanced regulation standard within the Morecambe Bay, the £70M catchment solution will involve the construction of 29,000m3 of additional storm storage at its last in line sewerage pumping station along with a significant increase in its pumped pass forward flow to treatment.  At the receiving treatment works at Morecambe WwTW, the site will undergo a major revamp which will involve the construction of a granular activated sludge process – one of only a few installations so far within the UK.  9200m3 of onsite tidal storage along with an increased outfall discharge rate and a major upgrade to its existing outfall diffusers will also be provided in order to meet the environmental standards set by the EA for this works.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the hydraulic and multidisciplinary engineering challenges the project has faced along with presenting key themes such as understanding the project need and a TOTEX driven design approach – hopefully providing attendees with an insight of a current & live example of a catchment strategy project, and a very large one at that!
