Energy Recovery from Sewage Screenings through Anaerobic Digestion (AD)

Paul Lavender, Aqua Enviro: PRESENTATION ONLY

(free)

Screenings Characterisation:
• Quantity of screenings will vary diurnally and seasonally (first flush events)
• function of the screen aperture, wastewater flow, characteristics of the catchment, type of collection system, and type of screen
• High peaking factors – 80% of screenings may arrive in 3-4 hour period
• Screenings Capture Ratio (SCR) varies depending on screen type1

• Between 0.01 to 0.03 m3 per 1000 population per day. Density varies between 600-900 kg/m3 . Dry solids 10-20% and organic content 80-90% DS1
• This study observed 10-20% DS in raw screenings and ~38% DS in washed and compacted screenings. Both screenings types considered.
• Methane yield of 0.335 Nm3/kg VSapplied achieved in batch tests. If digested then potential for each tonne DS to remove 466 kg from landfill, save 4.6 tonne equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2 eq) and deliver 3.4 MWh of renewable
energy2
