Data management plays a critical role in managing energy use and cost in the water industry. New data management opportunities are now driving the data revolution for effective utility management and have been progressively incorporated into plant operation and planning. This technological shift has been providing utilities with opportunities to transform data into actionable information together with a real-time, proactive decision-making approach, thereby enabling energy efficient, cost effective and sustainable operations.
However, despite the technological, analytical and computational advancements, the knowledge of the systems available for meaningful data access, performance optimization, benchmarking and visualization, and their related deployment are still limited. To date, there is no comprehensive knowledge base for utilities on the resources available for energy data management and there is no documented business case that supports enhancement of energy data management practices.
With a funding from the Water Research Foundation and participation from ~30 water and wastewater utilities and software/equipment providers, this study developed guidance on energy data management practices for achieving energy efficient and cost-effective operations. The presentation will include the leading practices on data collection, data analysis, intelligent process control and display methods for improved energy efficiency and reduced costs.
