Biosolids are a stabilised sewage sludge generated as a by-product from wastewater treatment facilities.
- In Australia alone, an estimated 2.05 M wet tonnes (or 310 K dry tonnes) of biosolids are generated each year.
- Currently biosolids are primarily managed by stockpiling (typically for 2-3 years) and subsequent major applications to agricultural land to allow for nutrient recovery (64%),stockpiling (9%), landscaping (7%) and soil rehabilitation (16%).
