As result of some interesting breakthroughs in biological wastewater treatment, the Dutch are currently internationally acknowledged for their extensive contributions to state-of-the art biological wastewater treatment. These breakthroughs enable a better, cheaper and more sustainable wastewater treatment at significant lower energy consumption. Breakthroughs presented in this paper are:

Advanced biological nutrient removal in deep activated sludge systems
Membrane Bio Reactor
Bio-augmentation for increased nitrogen removal
Aerobic granule technology for significant reduction of treatment costs and energy consumption
