DEVELOPMENTS IN ULTRASOUND DISINTEGRATION

This paper reviews some existing and proposed ultrasound technologies and their beneficial effects. The 3 process areas reviewed are activated sludge minimisation, foam prevention and digester enhancement. Technologies are reviewed in their ability to deliver intensity, wavelength and the duration of sonication. General conclusions are made in relation to each process area. Ultrasound has been proved to work and a clearer understanding of how it works is emerging. The effectiveness of the process is system dependent. An improved sonication system is introduced in the paper.
