An air dispersion model was utilized to develop an odour abatement notional solution for an existing sewage treatment works. The site experienced high number of odour complaints during a summer, despite having limited number of complaints during the past years. A site odour survey indicated that the issues were related with sludge storage and treatment not previously observed due to anaerobic sludge digestion occurring onsite that is currently abandoned. The post-processed data were fed into the dispersion model to allow a suitable solution to be identified. The modelling identified a potential odour abatement solution that could reduce the odour impact from the sludge storage/processing area significantly.

The work present the approach that Yorkshire Water is taking in order to develop notional solutions and address operational problems related with odours with includes site specific odour surveys and in house odour dispersion modelling to identify solutions that meets YW targets.
