United Utilities (UU) is the UK’s largest listed water and wastewater company, serving over 7 million customers in the Northwest of England; including Liverpool and Manchester. In June of 2015, UU awarded the upgrade of the Morecambe Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) to C2V+, which is a joint venture between Jacobs Engineering (CH2M at the time) and Volkerstevin, a Dutch multinational construction firm. The work included provision of storm storage, improvements in the remote influent pump station, and WwTW upgrades. The goals of this work were to: 1. Limit storm overflows by adjusting the balance between treatment capacity and equalization 2. Improve the overall treatment capacity to meet future treatment goals, and 3. To replace the existing works The existing facility consisted of the influent pump station at Schola Green with detention tanks and storm overflow and the WwTW, which included influent screening, primary settling tanks, submerged biological contactors (SBC’s, which are rotating biological contactors, similar to RBCs but with coarse bubble aeration), final settling tanks (FSTs), rapid sand filters (RGFs) and UV disinfection. Sludge from the primaries and FSTs were combined into a storage tank and periodically trucked from the site to a central sludge treatment facility.
