HenkWim de Mooij, Grontmij Nederlands BV: PRESENTATION ONLY

(free)

DEMON: stable and sustainable N-removal
DEMON® is a two step process combining partial nitritation and deammonification in a single reactor.
Process control is based on DO, time and minute variations in pH, resulting in a very simple and stable process operation.
Developed by University of Innsbruck
Licensed by Grontmij

DEMON characteristics
Suspended growth activated sludge process
Low SVI (< 70 ml/g)
Low sludge production;
Stable process due to pH control, process adjusts to changes in flow and load automatically;
Any configuration will do: SBR, continuous flow, carrier material, granular.
Suitable for re-use of existing tanks
Low energy requirement, as only 55% of ammonia is oxidised to nitrite;
No requirement for an external source of carbon (such as methanol);
No sensitivity to phosphate in sludge liquors, no pre-treatment required.
