(free)Nitrous Oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) with global warming potential approximately 300-times greater than carbon dioxide. Understanding N20 emissions is crucial for compliance with new green house gas regulations and for calculating emission inventories to show reduction in environmental impact.
In WWTPs, it is well documented that N2O is primarily produced during the biological nitrogen removal processes of nitrification and denitrification. N2O generation is expected to fluctuate within the mixed liquor due to significant spatial variations in biomass and substrate concentrations. Consequently, emissions will vary over time with aeration intensity and seasonal temperature changes.
