(free)The use of future scenarios would aid the UK water industry in addressing uncertainty in the delivery of sustainability goals whilst
maintaining their public health duty.
To address the challenges and uncertainties facing the water industry and enable holistic, system-based decisions a series of tools are proposed that integrate visualisations, indicators and foresight. Visualisations, through the implementation of system maps, enable accessibility of assessments and the establishment of a common method of communication to capture, analyse and interpret information. These tools aim to create a platform that can be used in participatory techniques and form a bridge between technical specialists, stakeholders and decision-makers. In so doing, they generate a platform to enable multi-faceted discussion of requirements that reflect the water industries role as a provider of public good.
The water industry faces a complex array of externalities that impact the success of investment decisions. Community behaviours, political
frameworks, the cost-of-living crisis, climate change and innovation opportunities develop and interact with long-term asset investment over
time impacting the outcomes that are achieved. Can lessons be learnt from other sectors to provide better long-term outcomes for people and
planet?
