(free)Flash Cooling is a new way of cooling and conditioning THP sludge before AD. The Flash Cooler utilizes the power of thermodynamic to reduce the temperature of the sludge without having to pump the sludge and without the sludge coming in contact with the surfaces of the HEX. This dramatically reduce the OPEX and maintenance cost.
The cooling of the sludge take place in the Cooler there is a tank operated under vacuum. The vacuum reduces the boiling point of the water and therefore the water evaporates and reduces the temperature of the sludge.
The vacuum is maintained by a HEX condenser where the vapor from the flash is again condensed. The condenser is highly efficient and therefore the delta T between the cooling water and sludge can be as low as 5 ˚C. In hot climate conditions cooling water temperature as high as 30 ˚C can be applied. In cold climates it is possible to recover all the energy from the cooling for heating buildings.
