The commissioning stage of process projects is often misunderstood and its importance to the success of a project understated. Traditionally at the end of a process project, the commissioning stage is often left with little time in which to correct issues created by the design and construction stages, establish and optimise process performance before entering the performance testing and handover stages.
The impact and influence of project procurement on the commissioning stage are considered in the paper from initial tender specifications, contract award and the final design and construct package. The paper also presents operational experiences of commissioning sewage sludge thermal drying plant and the difficulties encountered by commissioning engineers both in the UK and overseas.
