A UK manufacturing company producing chemicals with on-site effluent treatment became concerned about continuing recycling of their non-hazardous sludge to agricultural land, due to predicted future sludge metal contents. Other concerns were related to the new Landfill Directive constraints, particularly organic carbon and leachable metals, which inferred that with future manufacturing production changes, sludge pre-treatment before land filling would be required. Consequently reviewing sludge treatment processes was needed to assess alternatives and identify the optimal sludge treatment processes and disposal route. Thickening, centrifugation plus sludge drying (to ~35%DS), with off-site incineration was concluded to be the preferred option.
