Brighton & Hove: the role of control and monitoring in commissioning of a large wastewater treatment plant

Southern Water’s £300m environmental improvement scheme is bringing Cleaner Seas to Sussex; treating the 95 million litres of wastewater generated each day by nearly 300,000 people in the Brighton and Hove catchment. Including a new wastewater treatment works, two pumping stations, 11km of new sewer tunnel and a 2.5km outfall, this is the UK’s last major scheme to meet Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive standards. The project was delivered by 4Delivery (a Joint Venture between Veolia Water, Costain and MWH).
The commissioning of the scheme was no mean feat. Considering the scale of the project and the amount of process plants involved, the commissioning went very smoothly. This was mainly due to a considerable degree of planning, good communication and teamwork between the main stakeholders, in particular the main contractor 4D and the client Southern Water.
The commissioning and monitoring of the new treatment plant and  ssociated pumping stations relied heavily on instrumentation, data analysis and alarm management. The operation team is now strong of a year of good quality data from the works, which will help them in assessing the plant performance and in optimising the assets further.
