Robin Green, CIWEM President
(free)The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is an independent professional body representing over 12,000 managers, and other professionals, in all sectors, who are responsible for the stewardship of environmental assets. Biosolids and biowastes are an inevitable consequence of human life and especially of urban living where the production of organic residuals is unavoidably magnified by the concentration of people. In nature nutrients are cycled from the soil to plants and animals and back to the soil. Plants fix atmospheric carbon dioxide and release oxygen; decaying organic matter feeds the soil to feed the plants and it also feeds the biomass in the soil and improves its ability to filter contaminants out of water as it percolates to underground reserves and to watercourses. Biosolids and biowastes exemplify many of the technical and communication issues we face today. It is a field of continuous scientific and technological development. CIWEM welcomes opportunities for sharing information and for Continuing Professional Development; as President I wish the conference every success and continued usefulness.
