Biomass Opportunities from Distillery Co-products

Helius Energy plc has developed a process to re-engineer the by-product processing (water,
pot ale and draff) stream in distilleries. By combining two technologies (GreenFieldsTM
treatment and GreenSwitchTM biomass combined heat and power), distillers are able to
enhance the value of these co-products, into organic soil conditioners, livestock feeds and
lactic acid. Where the processing technology is co-located with an adjacent GreenSwitchTM
plant, the distillery can produce sustainable heat and power from co-products, as well as
selling surplus heat and power to local users and the distribution network. This paper focuses
in particular on trials of the GreenFieldsTM Organic Soil Conditioner product, with specific
reference to trials on organic crops of spring barley and carrots.
