The ATHOS® Process at Trucazzano Italy a 350,000PE facility, is the first of a number of sites >150,000PE, which will utilise the ATHOS® Wet Oxidation process to minimise the complete inventory of biosolid residuals by flameless oxidation, to come on-stream. This follows the development work and optimisation of the first Industrial scale ATHOS® plant, the 50,000PE facility on the Ginestous site for the city of Toulouse, France.
The paper demonstrates the ATHOS® principle and details the status of the construction at Trucazzano, it outlines some of the difficulties encountered in scaling up the ATHOS® process from the plant at Toulouse by a factor of 5 times for solids &~2.7 times for volume, it details how these problems were overcome. The ATHOS plant at Trucazzano not only processes the indigenous sludge but also treats imported cake from two other facilities; these biosolids are diluted with effluent (or SAS) prior to treatment.
KEY WORDS ATHOS®, Biosolids, Dioxins/Furans, Minimisation, Residual Solids, Sewage Sludge, Wastewater, Wet Oxidation.
