Application of KPI’s in Large WwTW Operation and Optimisation

Adam, J., Celtic Anglian Water

(free)

Celtic Anglian Water is the leading water and wastewater services provider in Ireland and the
biggest asset the company operates is Dublin’s PE 1.7 million Ringsend WwTW. A recently
developed and implemented Operation and Maintenance functional strategy for Ringsend
WwTW put an emphasis on the introduction of key performance indicators for plant operation
and optimization. Attention was paid in the early stage of KPI’s development that only and
truly “key” performance indicators were chosen.

The KPI’s were successfully introduced to each process area, involving the whole team.  Since their introduction, the KPI’s and related targets have been reviewed and presented to the team on a regular basis. The experience gained from the application of KPI’s has been very positive. Operation, performance and cost control has improved significantly as well as awareness of this within the whole team. The benefits are manifest in reduced operational cost. Based on this experience KPI’s are being introduced to the plant maintenance programme as well.
