Application of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in the investigation of nuisance odours: PRESENTATION ONLY

CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is the use of applied mathematics, physics and computing to visualise how a gas or liquid flows.  CFD has been around for many years and many people are familiar with it as a tool used for analysing airflows around cars and aircraft.  In this talk I will present a case study that shows how CFD was used to demonstrate levels of odour close to a waste management site that were not predicted by classical modelling such as ADMS.  The technique was used to develop an engineering solution to an odour problem and subsequently to demonstrate its effectiveness.  The cost of CFD modelling is reducing and the talk will also show how the technique could be used during the design of a new waste treatment facility to minimise the impact of odour on nearby receptors. Such aspects as building orientation, position and height of emission points, location of doors could be determined.  In addition, operating procedures covering the number of doors capable of being opened at any one time could also be produced.
