InSource Energy was established through the Carbon Trust in 2006 to provide energy-from-waste
solutions to companies in the food and drink industry across the UK. InSource Energy is now co-funded
by Scottish and Southern Energy and the Carbon Trust. The company now has projects under
ndevelopment in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. Customers include a ready meals
manufacturer, seafood supplier, brewer and distiller, dairy and cheese manufacturers, as well as abattoirs and agricultural waste producers.
The business model for InSource Energy is to provide on-site solutions, taking waste from a sole
producer and returning energy as part of the process requirement. InSource Energy provides feasibility,
design, construction, finance and operation services offering the customer a ‘one-stop’ shop.
This paper will discuss the brief history of InSource Energy including the background to our market
analysis and the development of our business model. In particular, the paper will focus on a case study
which demonstrates our proposal to separate a mixed and variable waste stream. Organics will be
pasteurised and treated through an anaerobic digester, whilst the inorganic waste stream will be
separated into recyclable materials. The case study will highlight the technical issues resolved through
the design process, and how we have worked with suppliers and the client to match technology capability
with client expectation.
The paper will also outline how the InSource Energy model can provide tailored solutions to meet a
variety of waste streams in many different food manufacturing sectors.
