Aerated continuously operated upflow filters (COUFs) such as the DynaOxy® device are a technology
that is undergoing rapid uptake across the world. These systems are not only being utilised to
remove COD and suspended solids in a tertiary polishing step but additionally; to nitrify ammonia
from a final effluent stream. This paper outlines the progress of a long term pilot project in North
West England in which two mirrored, full-scale aerated nitrifying filter pilot plants are being
operated. The role that different operating conditions, including loading and aeration rates, cleaning
rates, and the effect that media types have in the nitrifying capability of these types of filter are
being examined. The current progress to date is discussed and scope for future work explored.
