(free)Advanced monitoring and control strategies can offer a path to optimisation in the water industry,
where there are tightening regulations and a need for more efficient plant operation. Advanced
control can be used to meet this demand; increasing efficiency, reducing the carbon footprint and
providing steadier plant operation. This paper describes novel case studies of an advanced
process monitoring and control application for the water industry: control of an activated sludge
process within a municipal wastewater plant, providing more flexibility and reliability. This
represents an opportunity for an increased emphasis on plant automation, reliable
instrumentation and a focus on the Key Performance Indicators for individual sites and the water
treatment industry.
