Abstract BIO-CEL® membrane modules feature self-supporting sheets enabling frame-free installation and the elimination of edge clogging. The modules are open from top to bottom preventing the deposition of sludge and fibre accumulation (no braiding and silting up). Using optimised fine bubble cross-flow aeration with a high packing density and ability to back flush provides market leading flux rates at significantly reduced operating costs. Further reduction in operating costs and fouling prevention is available with an in-situ mechanical cleaning process (MCP). The membrane cleaning process involves the use of inert, organic granulate kept in motion by the cross-flow aeration. The fouling layer formed during the filtration process is removed safely without using chemicals or causing damage to the membrane surface. The reliability of the process has been proven by the continuous operation of a pilot plant for two years and has been successfully installed in several large scale plants.

The need for development

The driving forces behind new developments are the economic and environmental advantages of a product which means increased performance and energy efficiency. One of the most important things today is the question of water supply. One of the potential sources for water is wastewater. In the last century the biological treatment of sewage in wastewater treatment plants has gained worldwide acceptance but in order to reuse the water further treatment is needed. Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) technology offers a big opportunity to do this. Many such systems have been installed to date but there is still need for improvement. In this situation we would like to take the opportunity to summarise the possibilities of membranes to improve the treatment of wastewater.
