Paul Cooper – Veolia
(free)One of the main routes by which phosphorus gets into the aquatic system is via sewage works discharges. Due to changes in legislation and the lowered consents this implies that several hundred sewage works across the UK will need to retrofit phosphorus removal, and at many larger works there will be a need to improve the existing phosphorus residuals which biological phosphorus removal alone may not always hit. One way of improving performance is to provide tertiary phosphorus removal. Veolia has over 54 installations globally utilising our Actiflo® high rate sand ballasted lamella clarifier technology in both tertiary polishing and CSO applications where we are achieving treated water phosphorous guarantees down to levels below 0.1mg/l with >80% phosphorous removal which when combined with low outlet turbidity performance and a compact footprint up to 25 times smaller than comparable technologies the Actiflo® technology proves itself as a tried and tested solution.
