(free)This paper will demonstrate how an integrated systems approach can improve the overall performance of the entire sewage system by combining forecasts of the upstream urban drainage system with information from the wastewater treatment plant.
Model Predictive Control (MPC) has demonstrated the ability to improve the algorithms in real-time control systems and hence the operational decisions to provide improved performance. Several operational strategies at the WWTP will have the benefit of using forecasts of flow and load from the drainage system. These applications increase the hydraulic capacity by modifying the internal sludge flows of the settler and the biological reactor. Furthermore, the biological capacity is increased by optimization of future control of aeration given a forecasted large incoming ammonium load.
MPC strategies for flow and ammonia concentrations are soon to be tested for the biological nutrient removal which predicts the effect of different aeration control scenarios.
