(free)Abstract
This paper describes the approach, process and outcomes of a six-month strategic review of odour management and control at Seafield wastewater treatment works (WwTW) in Leith, which serves the urban and suburban population of Edinburgh and districts. There has been a variable and long-standing odour complaints history over a 40-year period associated with the operation of the plant. Key areas to be discussed will include:
The outcome of the stakeholder engagement exercise, involving 40 separate meetings and interviews, provided a key insight into the real-life experiences of local residents. The final outcome of the review involved development and then further evaluation of a range of short-term, medium-term and longer-term interventions. This involved seasonal dosing of incoming wastewater flows, minor capital and operational improvements, through to major capital scheme implementation.
