The Antwerp sludge drying plant (Deurne) has been in successful continuous operation for 5 years and
is an important installation for the overall sludge disposal strategy of Aquafin. This paper will first
explain the context of sludge disposal in Flanders, and how the Antwerp plant contributes to solve part
of this problem in a sustainable way.

It will then analyse the operational and maintenance results of 5 years operation of the plant. The
following items will be more specifically discussed :
• Operation and maintenance :
• yearly throughput
• plant availability and reasons for shut-down
• activities of the operators
• maintenance activities amongst other related to foreign objects, abrasion, corrosion and scaling

Energy :
• thermal energy balance of the different component of the plant
• power consumption of the different units of the installation
Possible future upgrade of the installation in order to improve its O&M performances.
Finally, it will discuss the benefits of using biogas as energy source and dried sludge pellets as a green
fuel for: cement kilns, co-incineration with sludge cake and coal power plants.
