IVAR IKS, Stavanger is the leading plant with thermal drying in Norway with over 10 years operating experiences with thermal drying and pelletising of sewage sludge. Based on successful operation with a Stord Rotadisc dryer, the plant was upgraded and expanded in 2002 to accommodate the total sludge production with a key aim to achieve continuous unmanned operation. The new plant was commissioned successfully in 2003 achieving Take Over in January 2004. Since then, the plant has operated successfully with limited operational problems.
The paper will summarise IVAR’s experiences with thermal drying over the last 10 years, including status of thermal drying systems for other members of the Norwegian Dryer User Group. The paper will also give a review of status for key issues like implementation of the ATEX directives, Quality Assurance Systems and use of dried products. Finally, the paper will also describe possible impacts of new regulations and the way forward.
