Phosphorus removal from wastewater has often been a challenge for small communities due to complexity and costs of current treatment systems. For this reason, small communities often rely on waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) for all their wastewater treatment needs. Although WSPs have relatively good organic and pathogen removal, phosphorus removal is typically low and ranges between 15 to 50%. With regional governments becoming increasingly stricter on phosphorus discharge, these small communities are facing costly upgrades to meet discharge consents
