An overview of the phosphorus removal processes to meet stringent discharge limits of < 0.1 mgP/L: PRESENTATION ONLY

Andalib, M., Stantec USA

(free)

Removal mechanisms:
1. Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (Soluble P → Particulate P↓)
2. Chemical Phosphorus Removal (orders of magnitude faster) Soluble P → Particulate P↓
3. Physical separation of particulate matter

Conclusions

  • Achieving low phosphorus limits of below 0.1 mg P/L is technically viable but depends on many parameters, including process selection, type of technology, chemical selection
  • Understanding the phosphorus fractionations in the influent is necessary
  • Adequate engineering design in every stage of the process ensures process consistency and reliability
  • Extensive effort must be taken in the selection and implementation of chemical dosage
  • Pilot studies for tertiary processes are recommended as each wastewater is unique
