INTEGRATION OF A BIOLOGICAL ADVANCED DIGESTION SYSTEM AT CAMBRIDGE STC

As part of a significant investment in Advanced Digestion technology in AMP 4, Anglian Water
has installed an Enhanced Enzymic Hydrolysis plant at their Cambridge STC. As Anglian Waters
framework partners, @One Alliance, Skanska Aker Kvaerner were charged with reviewing a
number of technologies and technical options to upgrade the existing pasteurisation system at
site to produce an Enhanced Treated product. After due diligence the biological Enhanced
Enzymic Hydrolysis system was selected over other (high temperature) thermal systems under
consideration. The selection of a low temperature system was particularly important to Anglian
Water following their apprehension of potential Vivianite deposition for sludges imported from
sites with Fe dosing for P removal, when subject to high temperatures.
This paper outlines the Cambridge STC flowsheet and reviews the integration of Advanced
Digestion with the existing heating, gas handling and digester feed infrastructure. Lessons
learned are discussed along with suggestions for future successful projects. The outline design
of the plant will be presented along with improvements made to the system during the course of
project development that have built upon an already established technology. The paper will go
on to discuss the commissioning and performance testing of the plant with preliminary data
presented showing the performance before and after, both in terms of volatile solids destruction
and pathogen reduction.
