This paper discusses in some detail the isothermal self-heating basket tests that are used to obtain ignition behaviour of bulk materials. It describes how the tests are undertaken, the factors affecting the test results and will illustrate how isothermal ignition theory, when correctly applied to various parts of a sewage sludge dryer process plant, can be a powerful tool in reducing the self-heating risks. It will also highlight the limitations of the technique, and how drying plant designers, manufacturers and operators can undertake some simple steps to reduce the risk of fires occurring as well as complying with DSEAR. Additional ignition test are also covered in the paper, describing how these can be another useful tool in fully characterising the nature of the materials present at the various stages of the drying process.
