Key differences between stone and plastic media wrt heat transfer

Plastic media has a far higher voidage than stone media (97% cw 35% for clean medias) and voidage connectivity is also greater. This means that the media can breathe/ventilate more readily as air flow resistance is much lower.

Material mass in a plastic media filter is therefore much lower than stone media at ~27 Kg/m3 compared to ~ 1500 Kg/m3 . The thermal inertia of plastic media is therefore much lower.
