(free)Municipal wastewater treatment plants face challenges to reduce their nutrient emissions as well as to address the topic of emerging contaminants. This presentation investigates the possibilities to combine treatment of both issues. Lab and pilot research was performed into the removal of micropollutants with ozone followed by a biological filter for additional nitrogen and phosphorus removal. A pilot installation was placed at the municipal wastewater treatment plant Winterswijk, the Netherlands. The ozone dosage was regulated based on the measured UV254 absorbance in the inflow of the pilot. Additionally, UV could be applied to obtain an advanced oxidation processes together with the ozone. The majority of the micropollutants was effectively removed with an average removal of more than 80% at the pilot, depending on the ozone dosage. Sand filtration was investigated as further treatment step to obtain additional nutrient removal using the pilot effluent. In the presentation the results will be presented in further detail, including ozone dosages, micropollutant and nutrient removals.
