Following the recent Public Interest Commitment by water companies in England to become net zero carbon by 2030, we have been working closely with Water UK, all UK water companies and external stakeholders, to develop a net zero carbon roadmap for the sector by 2030. The project is currently ongoing and we will be sharing key project messages to date (level of detail tbc with Water UK near the time of the conference).

The presentation will cover the overall approach to developing the sector’s net zero roadmap to 2030 and will address themes such as:

• how net zero carbon may be defined for the water sector
• what are the challenges associated with selecting the sector’s GHG emission boundaries and scope to help develop the sector’s carbon baseline
• what are the carbon hotspots how the sector’s operational GHG emissions may change over time by 2030, particularly process emissions
• what are the main decarbonisation and GHG removal measures that could be considered and which ones could the sector directly control or influence
• how could the water sector approach the development of no-regrets net zero carbon pathways by 2030 and what could a post-2030 water sector look like
