An overview of the current state-of-the-art in terms of the tools available for assessing odour problems and then illustrates their use through case studies. The presentation will introduce the factors that influence development of odour impact (i.e. source characteristics, pathway and receptor sensitivity), and how assessment tools fit in with this model. An overview of the working principle, method and area of application of each technique will then be provided with relevant but succinct examples. This will include the following:
- Sensory analysis methods including measurement of odour strength, unpleasantness, character and offensiveness in the laboratory and in the field.
- Molecular analysis techniques including the use of surrogate odour markers, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy and an innovative technique known as gas chromatography- olfactometry.
- Pathway assessment tools such as dispersion modelling (including real time models) and leakage testing/gas tracer measurement.
Two or three case studies will then be discussed illustrating real life examples of how these tools were applied to solve odour problems and develop robust odour management solutions. Forth coming developments in odour assessment standards and techniques will also be summarised.
