- Ferric sludges are waste products from water treatment industry and are demonstrably non-toxic to wetland plants
- Ferric sludges have a high specific surface area and are excellent sorbents for contaminants
- Ferric sludges are uv active and have the ability to photocatalytically degrade recalcitrant organic contaminants (including pharmaceuticals) as shown in authors lab work and literature. Thus ferric sludges may offer a low cost wetland substrate for sorption and degradation of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals in wastewater
