High efficiency MBBR and the unique media clarifier: PRESENTATION ONLY

McAteer, J., Aqwise, UK

(free)

In this paper I will discuss the use of a distinctive biomass carrier, designed to minimise operating and capital costs, with a geometrically open shape to optimise water, oxygen and nutrient transfer. The specific geometry of the carrier enables a reduction in power consumption for the MBBR process by the use of fine bubble diffusers, installed in a specific pattern to increase the efficiency of mixing and oxygen transfer. The unique aeration design creates a ‘double roll’ within the MBBR reactor – no additional air is required for the rolling motion – the air required to fulfil the biomass demand is sufficient for both biological activity and mixing.

Separation of suspended solids presents a number of challenges peculiar to MBBR technology due to the nature of the solids sloughed off the carriers. I will present site data to show how the unique Media Clarifier operates to reduce the TSS whilst maintaining a high upflow velocity – minimising the footprint required. The Media Clarifier operates with a floating layer of specific media carriers and has a flat base to simplify the construction and installation. The Media Clarifier can readily achieve TSS in the treated water of < 30 mg/l without the addition of any chemicals.
